An annual croquet tournament between York and Lancaster universities reached a nail-biting climax. The Roses Tournament was won by York by a score of 124 to 122, with the universities' chancellors Sir Chris Bonington and Greg Dyke, vice-chancellors Paul Wellings and Brian Cantor fighting it out on the final day. The contest, which remains one of the biggest intervarsity tournaments in the country, was hosted by Lancaster University. This year, for the first time, the college principals and provosts competed. Next year, the universities are considering introducing laser clay-pigeon shooting.
