Pensioners may not need an excuse to spend their retirement sitting in the sun, but they have been given a reason to do so by researchers at the University of Warwick. According to a study, spending more time in the sunshine, which stimulates production of vitamin D in the skin, could help reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes among older people. Oscar Franco, assistant clinical lecturer in public health at Warwick Medical School and leader of the study, said: "The dermal production of vitamin D following standard exposure to UVB light decreases with age because of atrophic skin changes."
