University of Sheffield - Freedom of the press scrutinised

The University of Sheffield has launched a centre to study issues of media freedom and standards in the UK and farther afield. The Centre for Freedom of the Media, part of the university's department of journalism studies, will bring together journalists and scholars to research and evaluate the role of independent news organisations in building and maintaining political and civil freedom. The centre, which will host public events to raise awareness of the importance of media independence, will be led by Jackie Harrison, head of journalism studies.
