Defra is launching a programme of research into transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, which aims to improve to the health and welfare of kept animals and to protect society from impact of animal diseases. Defra funds research to investigate specific problems, to develop, guide and implement policy options and to assess the effectiveness of voluntary and statutory actions.
