This research programme aims to protect the consumer from the possible risks of exposure to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or atypical scrapie infectivity from the food chain by providing the scientific basis for the development of proportionate and enforceable controls. It also provides information to enable consumers to make a reasoned choice in low risk and scientifically unproven situations.
