Another Tekes-funded project is developing smart food packaging that gives cooking instructions to the microwave oven, monitors food inventory in the refrigerator and reorders online via a home computer.

The study of freshness detection in packing using electronic tags and other indicators is part of the Tekes national research project.

Freshness alarms may signal that food has been stored at temperatures above the suggested maximum by directly measuring the microbial quality.
