A centre of research in nutrition and health, backed by £12 million from the Scottish Government, has been created by the merger of the University of Aberdeen and the Rowett Research Institute.

The institute's director, Peter Morgan, who becomes a vice-principal at the university, said: "Given the recent revelation that Scotland ranks second only to the US in the global league table for obesity, it is obvious that this new initiative has never been more timely."

The new Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health will be part of the university's College of Life Sciences Medicine.
