Brian Brivati helpfully notes that his own Kingston University was responding to the needs of society but without declaring which particular society he had in mind. As joint editor of New Labour in Power: Precedents and Prospects, his support for the chancellor is not entirely unexpected. Perhaps there is a third way - Oxford should not be scrapped or privatised, but Brivatised.
