Academics at Manchester University were last week seen walking aimlessly down corridors trying to think of something to do. No, not another symptom of the pay dispute. The university's internet services were down for days, meaning no e-mail or web for staff. One lecturer said it was like watching drug addicts going cold turkey. Worse, they also had to face the frightening prospect of actually having to talk to each other.
