Renaissance scientists

September 5, 1997

Danish students preferring not to continue with science (THES, August 1) reminds me of a teacher's comment when I gave a talk at her school nearly 30 years ago that "the best educated girls in this school are the scientists".

They still read English literature and history, played musical instruments, took leading roles in school plays, studied maps, spoke European languages and dominated sport. The arts students were only too pleased to forget all about science and mathematics.
