Ann Buchanan has been appointed to the Economic and Social Research Council. Professor Buchanan is director of the Centre for Research into Parenting and Children, professor of social work and fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford University.

Mark Addis , a reader in philosophy and cultural theory at the University of Central England in Birmingham, has been invited to join the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College.

Jane Longmore , currently head of the School of Humanities at Greenwich University, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor, academic, at Southampton Solent University. She succeeds Van Gore. Professor Gore took up the post of vice-chancellor in August.

Teresa Waring , professor, associate dean and head of Sunderland Business School, has joined Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University as professor of organisation and human resources management.

Chris Barratt has been appointed chair of reproductive medicine at Dundee University. Professor Barratt, who was previously at Birmingham University, developed the first over-the-counter fertility test.
