* Colin Harvey , director of the Human Rights Centre at Queen's University Belfast since 2005, has been appointed the new head of the university's law school.

* Heather Tierney-Moore , nurse director of NHS Lothian, has been appointed visiting professor to the faculty of health, life and social sciences at Napier University.

* The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, councillor Randal Brew , was officially installed as the chancellor of the University of Central England last week.

* Anglia Ruskin University has appointed Kate Barker , a former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, as chair of its board of governors.

* Heriot-Watt University has appointed Douglas Greenhalgh head of the school of engineering and physical sciences. He takes up the post on November 2 and joins from Cranfield University.

* Lord Macdonald of Tradeston CBE - the former Labour minister better known as Gus Macdonald - is to be installed as the next chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University. He will formally succeed the late Magnus Magnusson, who was chancellor from November 2002 until his death in January of this year.
