* Louise Merrett has been appointed Lovells lecturer in law at Cambridge University. She is currently a college teaching officer as well as director of studies in law at Trinity College, Cambridge.

* Leicester University has appointed: Howard Meltzer , deputy divisional director, Health and Care Division at the Office for National Statistics, to a chair in the department of psychiatry (section of social and epidemiological psychiatry); Tom Keenoy , previously reader in management and senior research fellow at King's College, London, professor in its Management Centre; and Jingzhe Pan , previously a reader in solid mechanics at Surrey University, professor in mechanics of materials.

* Vladimiro Sassone , former head of the department of informatics at Essex University, has been appointed professor at the School of Electronics and Computer Science at Southampton University.

* Stephen Turner , formerly at General Electric and ExxonMobil, has been appointed director of estate development at Anglia Ruskin University. He is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and of the British Institute of Facilities Managers.
