Julie Grant, senior teacher in charge of staff development at the Howard School in Gillingham, Kent, has been appointed head of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

The University of London has appointed the following: Joanna Cannon and Katie Scott to readers in the history of art at the Courtauld Institute of Art; Clyve Jones, to reader in modern history at the Institute of Historical Research; Alan Thacker, to reader in medieval history at the Institute of Historical Research; Dunstan Ward, to senior lecturer in English at the British Institute in Paris; and Helen Xanthaki, to senior research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies.

Neil Hood, professor of business policy at Strathclyde International Business Unit, has been appointed deputy chairman of Scottish Enterprise.

Geoff Ward, an expert in American literature at the University of Dundee, has been awarded a fellowship from the Royal Society of Arts.

Lord Macfarlane has been appointed as honorary president Glasgow School of Art; Prince Charles is to become patron.
