Imperial College , London, has announced the principals of its new faculties: John Perkins , head of chemical engineering and chemical technology, will become principal of the faculty of engineering; Michael Hassell , head of biology and biochemistry, will become principal of the faculty of life sciences; Sir Leszek Borysiewicz , principal of the medical school, will become principal of the faculty of medicine; and John Pendry , head of physics, will become principal of the faculty of physical sciences. Jeff Waage , chief executive of CABI Bioscience, will become head of Wye College .

Priscilla Alderson of the Social Science Research Unit at London University's Institute of Education has been made professor of childhood studies.

Novelists Alasdair Gray , James Kelman and Tom Leonard have been appointed jointly to the chair of creative writing at the University of Glasgow .

Helen Roberts , a non-executive director of Camden and Islington Health Authority, has joined St Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery at City University as professor of child health.

Stuart Siddell , professor of molecular virology at the University of Wurtzburg, has been appointed to the chair of virology at the University of Bristol .
