Hugh Begg , an independent consultant, has been appointed visiting professor in local economic development in the University of Abertay Dundee 's school of social and health sciences.

The Kent Institute of Art & Design has appointed David Buss , director of academic affairs and chair of the Quality Assurance Agency's art and design benchmarking panel, as professor of art and design higher education.

The University of Liverpool has appointed the following: Charles Forsdick , of the University of Glasgow, to the James Barrow chair of French; Richard Gaskin , of the University of Sussex, to a chair in philosophy; Michael Fisher , of Manchester Metropolitan University, to a chair of computer science; Turo Juhani Nurmikko , of the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery National Health Service Trust, to the Pain Relief Foundation chair of pain science; Graham Embery , of the University of Wales College of Medicine, to the chair of dental sciences; and Yin Ling Cecilia Wong , of the University of Manchester, to the chair of planning. It has also conferred the title of professor on the following: William Fraser , of the department of clinical chemistry; Alexander McLennan , of the school of biological sciences; Rasmita Raval , of the department of chemistry; Victor Goryunov , of the department of mathematical sciences; and Peter Winstanley , of the department of pharmacology and therapeutics.

Judith Freedman , formerly at the London School of Economics and joint editor of the British Tax Review , has been appointed to a new chair in taxation law at the University of Oxford .

Paul Jeffrey , former head of the computing and resources management division at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, has been appointed director of computing services at the University of Oxford .

Steve Williamson , of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, has become a member of the technical opportunities panel of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council .
