On a roll

July 8, 2010

Measuring more than 3ft, the Garibaldi Panorama, which depicts the life story of Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, is one of the longest paintings in the world. A digitised version of the picture viewed on a Microsoft Surface table will form the centrepiece of a major British Library exhibition. Growing Knowledge: The Evolution of Research will examine the future of research methods and look at the role of new digital tools. The original painting was donated to Brown University Library in the US in 2005. Librarians and academics from the department of Italian studies at Brown helped to digitise the image and make it available to researchers online. The British Library exhibition, held in partnership with Times Higher Education, will run from 12 October 2010 to 16 July 2011.
