, emeritus professor of biology at the University of Cambridge, was awarded the 2001 International Prize by the society.

American Geophysical Union
Dan McKenzie
, professor of earth sciences at the University of Cambridge has been awarded the union's top award, the Bowie Medal for outstanding contributions to fundamental geo-physics.
Harry Elderfield , professor and executive secretary of the Committee for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at the University of Cambridge has been elected a member of the AGU and an honorary fellow of the European Union of Geosciences.

US National Academy of Sciences
Ronald Oxburgh
, honorary professor at the University of Cambridge, rector of Imperial College, London (1993-2001) chief scientific adviser to the Ministry of Defence (1988-93) has been elected a foreign association of the academy.
