Clinton visits Warwick
Bill Clinton, president of the United States, visits the University of Warwick today to deliver a speech on globalisation. The university has had to provide parking space for six helicopters, lay on 350 extra telephones, 4.5 miles of cabling, 150 extra computers and 40 flower arrangements.

Unions fight QMW lay-offs
Trade unions at Queen Mary, University of London, will lobby the college’s council meeting tonight in a bid to head off redundancy plans for up to 40 medical school teaching staff. The Association of University Teachers said that the college was overspending by £4.5 million a year.

Cash and jobs crisis hits Welsh
Welsh higher education is facing a funding and recruitment crisis, vice-chancellors and funding chiefs have told the Welsh Assembly’s review of higher education. Without more money and greater collaboration, Welsh universities will fail to meet the needs of the Welsh economy, they said.

Graduate stubs out Notts award
Business graduate Jon Rouse is turning down a student of the year award from Nottingham University in protest at its acceptance of £3.8 million from British Amercian Tobacco. He has asked for the £50 prize to be donated to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
