Soros gives $250m to Budapest institution
Financier George Soros has donated $250 million (£175 million) to the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, which he founded ten years ago to serve graduate students in the former Eastern Bloc. Almost half the money will be used to upgrade the CEU’s sociology department in Warsaw, Poland, into a “sister university”.

Palestine's Islamic University reopens
The Islamic University in Palestine, where two people died and dozens were injured during a demonstration against the US air strikes in Afghanistan, has reopened after five days. A 21-year-old Palestinian student who had been shot in the head died on Saturday.

US seeks information on foreign students
Federal officials in the US have contacted about 200 colleges to gain information on foreign students since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
