IST 2003: The Opportunities Ahead

October 6, 2003

Brussels, 03 Oct 2003

'The research effort of IST [information society technologies] is an essential element of the EU's information society policy. It mobilises the industrial and research community around medium to long-term goals, serving to strengthen European leadership in strategic areas,' writes EU Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, Erkki Liikanen, in the foreword to the new booklet: 'IST 2003: The Opportunities Ahead'.

The publication illustrates how the IST priority, funded under the Commission's Framework Programmes for research, is working towards the future. It focuses on the use of IST within three key settings: by individuals in the home and elsewhere (intelligent spaces); by enterprises and in the workplace (the knowledge economy); and by public services and society at large (digital communities). A fourth section covers core technologies that underpin future services and applications across these scenarios - enabling technologies.

Central to the booklet is transition from the Fifth to the Sixth Framework Programme. The chapters outline the rationale for, as well as the objectives of the IST priority, and present key technological challenges and policy issues relating to specific areas of the programme.
