Imperial breaks away

Imperial College London is to become an independent university on July 8 next year, its 100th birthday. It decided to withdraw from the University of London in December and the date was confirmed at a meeting of its ruling council on July 14. Imperial said staff and students would continue to use the University of London's Senate House library.
