Honorary degrees

University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology/ Manchester Metropolitan University The universities have jointly awarded an honorary MSc to Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United Football Club.

University of East London Awarded at the Tavistock Clinic: DLitt: Harold Bridger, founder member of the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations and pioneer in the development of therapeutic communities; Al Alvarez, literary critic and author.

University of Central England An honorary doctorate has been awarded to Egbert Sylvester Carless, retired British Telecom engineer, chairman of former Handsworth Constituency Labour Party and vice chairman of the Birmingham Labour Party, in recognition of his services to improved access to education for ethnic minority communities.
