Higher education appointments

University College, Northampton

The title of professor has been conferred upon Godfrey Mazhindu , director of the centre for health education.


Kent Institute of Art & Design

Don Gray has been appointed head of the school of architecture and will join the institute in January 2001. Unit master at the Architectural Association (with Mark Fisher) and director of studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture (with Peter Cook) he is also principal of Future Cities, a company engaged in creative urban regenerative ideas.


Royal Northern College of Music

The following have been elected honorary fellows of the college:

Arnaldo Cohen , pianist and Broadwood fellow in keyboard studies at the college;

John Corigliano
, Oscar-winning composer and one of the college's special guest composers;

Evelyn Glennie
, percussionist who has been closely associated with the college, giving masterclasses and appearing in concerts;

Peter Jonas , general director of English National Opera;

Edward Warren
, resident conductor of the colleges symphony orchestra and tutor in conducting;

David Young , academic registrar and former lecturer in the school of academic studies;

Honorary membership of the college has been awarded to:

Robert Boucher , former vice chancellor of UMIST who will take up his appointment as vice chancellor of the University of Salford in January 2001;

Peter Marychurch , chairman of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (1994-2000) and chairman of Cheltenham Arts Festivals Company.
