Students are confident about their abilities to comprehend what is involved in original research, according to a survey by Headfiller, a student website from Blackwells. But lecturers asked to comment on the survey said that many undergraduates had a lack of understanding about basic research methods.
Some lecturers believe that the structure of secondary education "discourages original thinking" and so inhibits research skills.
