The lifetime of a pair of flip-flops was the subject of a study by a professor of sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Caroline Knowles held an exhibition at the university detailing the project, for which she photographed the flip-flops in countries around the world. She is due to give lectures on the study in London, Leeds and Singapore. It was funded by a British Academy grant, and took the form of an "object biography", an anthropological approach that tracks and records the people, places and processes that an object encounters during its lifetime.
