Christopher Edwards (below), principal of Imperial College, London's school of medicine, will become vice-chancellor of Newcastle University from January 2001, following James Wright's retirement.
Professor Edwards became the first principal of ICSM, which was formed by the merger with Imperial College of two undergraduate schools and two postgraduate institutions.
