Manchester University (formerly Umist) was taken to an employment tribunal this week by a scientist who claims that she was unfairly sacked while she was pregnant and had breast cancer. Dr Marina Ptushkina, who is claiming unfair dismissal and sex discrimination, is being backed by the Association of University Teachers. She says her contract was ended abruptly after returning to work when three months pregnant having had a third cancer operation.
