The THES expedition to Biosphere 2, the ecology centre in the Arizona desert built to perform experiments hermetically sealed off from the rest of the Earth (Biosphere 1), has revealed the secret of how the scientists there control its sometimes dangerous concentration of carbon dioxide. They leave the door open. Perhaps this is one of the improvements to operations there since Columbia University took over its scientific programme earlier this year.
