• A report in The THES , January 26 2001, referred to Robert Ely, former principal of Rose Bruford College, Sidcup, Kent as Mr Ely. He should, of course, have been described as Professor Ely. The report also stated that Professor Ely's staff had passed a vote of no confidence in him. There was no such vote. Professor Ely left the college after seven years to pursue his immediate career in Australia. The governors received his resignation with regret. We apologise to Professor Ely for any distress or embarrassment our report may have caused.

• The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council announced three new research professorships last week. It was mistakenly reported in The THES , March 2, that York University will develop analytical techniques for functional genomics and post-genomic science. In fact, this chair will be created at Umist.
