CORDIS gets even faster - a new higher-speed connection to the Internet backbone

CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has upgraded its connection to the Internet, opening a new high-bandwidth line direct to the backbone network. This new development in physical infrastructure will improve current service as well as pave the way for new, advanced services in the future.

The increase in data speed, from 6Mbps to 34Mbps, is reflected in an order of magnitude increase in the potential traffic that can be served by CORDIS. Users should benefit from a noticeable improvement in the speed of downloading and displaying pages.

The new connection runs from the CORDIS servers to the Restena Internet connection point, or Point-of-Presence (POP), in Luxembourg. This is in turn connected via a 155Mbps link to GÉANT, the pan-European high-speed communications network for research.

GÉANT and its partners the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) provide the research communications backbone infrastructure for 34 countries in Europe, operated by the organisation Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe (DANTE) in cooperation with the European Commission. The new CORDIS link to Restena means that the many institutions connected to this backbone, as well as non-academic users connected via the public Internet, will benefit from the new capacity.

The high-speed connection will position CORDIS for new developments, providing the extra bandwidth needed for the continuing growth of the CORDIS user base, as well as planned new services such as video streaming.
