Social anthropologist Anthony Cohen, provost of law and social sciences at Edinburgh University, has been appointed principal of Queen Margaret University College. He will succeed Joan Stringer, who leaves in January to become principal of Napier University.

"Acquiring university title will verify and acknowledge the excellence we already have within Queen Margaret. We intend to bring the organisation to the position where it achieves university title as soon as possible," he said.
