Busquin to attend Fraunhofer event on preparing for ERA

March 28, 2002

Brussels, March 2002

EU Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will attend an event held by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Brussels on 10 April, aimed at outlining its contribution to and support for the European research area (ERA).

The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, which claims to be the biggest European contract research society, is determined to support the 'ambitious' project of creating ERA and 'also aims to contribute significantly to the improvement of Europe's competitiveness'. In the long term, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft sees itself developing into a European research organisation.

In the past year, the society has opened a representative office in Brussels, signed further cooperative agreements with research organisations outside Germany and held discussions with Commissioner Busquin regarding FP6, the new Sixth Framework programme.

In addition to Commissioner Busquin, the Brussels event will be attended by Professor Hans-Jürgen Warnecke, President of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and a number of researchers from the society, who will present various research projects pursued through international networks.
