Scientific Committee of the European Amalfi Prize. The committee for sociology and social sciences has awarded the Amalfi Prize to Martin Albrow, professor in the school of sociology and social policy at Roehampton Institute, London and visiting professor at the London School of Economics from January 1, 1998, for his book, The Global Age.

The Franklin Institute, United States

David Payne, of the optoelectronics research centre at the University of Southampton, was presented with the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Engineering, awarded by the institute.

The Commonwealth of Singapore

Anthony Kelly, professor and extraordinary fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge and former vice-chancellor of Surrey University has been appointed Lee Kwan Yew distinguished visitor to the Commonwealth. He is joint chairman of the standing committee on structural safety for the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers and among other awards was presented in 1991 with the American Society for Minerals' gold medal.
