Hilary French, former deputy head of design products, has been appointed head of the School of Architecture and Design at the Royal College of Art. 

Ian Ivory has taken over as chair of the Scottish Agricultural College board of directors from Maitland Mackie. He is former partner and director of Stewart Ivory, vice-president of the Royal Agricultural Society of Scotland and a trustee of the Scottish Society for Crop Research.

The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology has appointed professors Trevor Wood-Harper, Bob Wood and David Wastell, all formerly at Salford University, to establish an information systems research group within the humanities faculty. 

John Aggleton, professor at the School of Psychology at Cardiff University, has been appointed to the Medical Research Council's cross-board group.

Frances Owen of City University London has been appointed director of quality, registrar and secretary at the University of Hull.

Tony Barnett, professor at the School of Development Studies at the University of East Anglia, has been awarded the Lucy Mair Medal by the Royal Anthropological Institute, for his work on the impact of Aids in society since 1986.

City University's Centre for Professional Development and Innovation has appointed: Tony Doherty of St Martin's College of Higher Education to cover director Caroline Leigh's sabbatical; and Laurence Solkin, formerly at London Metropolitan University, director with responsibility for programmes in professional development through work-based learning.
