Northern Ireland minister Adam Ingram has announced an 11.8 per cent funding increase for the province's 17 further education colleges. Core college recurrent funding has risen by 4 per cent, while capital funding has almost doubled. Mr Ingram also announced Pounds 5.8 million investment in initiatives aimed at supporting the local economy, widening access, improving teaching and learning and creating centres of excellence.

The province's two universities will have a total Pounds 117 million from the Department of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment for the coming academic year, an increase of almost 2 per cent. Queen's University, Belfast, will have Pounds 42.6 million core funding for teaching and Pounds 14 million for research, while Ulster University will have Pounds 45.5 million for teaching and Pounds 10.1 million for research.
