CARDIFF INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Glyn Jones, artist and head of the school of fine art, has been awarded the title of professor.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

Michael Barnes, previously professor of Scandinavian philology, has been made chair of Scandinavian studies.

Angel Garcia, previously professor of Spanish, has been appointed to the chair of Hispanic studies.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHUMBRIA

Susan Proctor, former nurse and research fellow in the department of nursing and community health studies at the Polytechnic of the South Bank, has been appointed as the first professor of nursing.

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

John Welsh, medical director of Hunters Hill Marie Curie Centre in Glasgow, has been appointed to the Olav Kerr chair of palliative medicine; Colin Espie, consultant clinical psychologist with Consulting and Clinical Psychology Services of Ayrshire and Arran Community Health Care NHS Trust has been appointed to the chair of clinical psychology.

UNIVERSITY OF DERBY

The following have been appointed to new professorships within the school of business: David Gowland, former Bank of England adviser, will be responsible for the division of economics; Steve Letza, currently at the University of Bradford, will be responsible for the division of financial reporting; Graham Hall, formerly of Manchester Business School, will take up his post on completion of a comparative study of small businesses in the European Union.
