D. C. Wraith, senior research fellow at the University of Cambridge, to the chair in pathological sciences; R. J. Smith, lecturer in econometrics at the University of Cambridge, to a chair in economics; L. Doyal, director of research at the faculty of health and community studies, University of the West of England, to the chair in health and social care; A. G. Hutton, head of computational engineering group, Berkeley Nuclear Laboratories has been appointed visiting industrial professor in mathematics and mechanical engineering.

Alexander Broadie, former professor in philosophy, has been appointed to the chair of logic and rhetoric.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY

David Leyland, director of Southampton Institute, has been awarded a professorship, the first to be awarded to anyone outside the university.

UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING

Joseph Francis Moran, director of the Scottish centre for Japanese studies, has been appointed to a chair in Japanese studies.
