THE ROYAL SOCIETY.

The following research professorships have been appointed: Gerard Evan, principal scientist and head of biochemistry of the cell nucleus laboratory at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and winner of the Dr Josef Steiner Young Investigator Award 1996; Richard Borcherds, professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley; Brian Charlesworth, George Wells Beadle distinguished service professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago; Robin Irvine, head of the department of development and signalling at the Babraham Institute, Cambridge; Dan McKenzie, department of earth sciences at Cambridge.

UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

Trevor Salmon, senior lecturer in international relations and Jean Monnet professor of European integration studies at the University of St Andrews, has joined the department of politics and international relations.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD

Dirk Keyzer, professor of community health nursing at Deaking University, Australia, and, more recently in NHS consultancies, has been appointed to the chair of nursing studies.

UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH

Rod Blackshaw, principal scientific officer with the department of agriculture for Northern Ireland and senior lecturer in Queen's University Belfast, has been appointed head of agriculture and food studies in the Seale-Hayne faculty and professor of agricultural zoology.

UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING

Catherine Niven, nurse and psychologist, has been appointed the first professor in the department of nursing and midwifery.
