Jenny Thomas, senior lecturer in the department of linguistics and modern English language at the University of Lancaster, has been appointed professor of linguistics from August.

Imperial College of Science and Technology

The following have been appointed to visiting professorships: R. Ainsworth, group head of assessment technology in the structural integrity engineering division of Nuclear Electric, for three years from October 1, 1996, in the department of mechanical engineering; D. Anderson, senior adviser in the industry and energy department of the World Bank, for three years from October 1, 1996, in the centre for environmental technology; T. Jones, technical director for research and development and technical strategy in Epichem Ltd, for three years from December 1, 1996, in the department of chemistry and the IRC for semi-conductor materials; C. Rosenberg, associate professor in the department of electrical engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada, for two years from September 1, 1996, in the department of electrical and electronic engineering.

University of Central England

Chris Price, former director of Leeds Polytechnic (Leeds Metropolitan University) and visiting fellow at the centre for policy studies in education at the University of Leeds, has been appointed visiting professor in the faculty of law and social sciences.

University of Manchester

Readers promoted to chairs: John Healey, Middle Eastern studies; David Morgan, sociology; Lizabeth Stanley, sociology.
