Kent, keeper, department of coins and medals at the British Museum Rose Mary Crawshaw Prizes: Kate Flint, Linacre College, Oxford for The Woman Reader 1837-1914 and Ruth Smith, Cambridge University Careers Service for Handel's Oratorios and Eighteenth Century Thought Serena Medal for Italian Studies: Giovanni Aquilecchia, department of Italian, University College, London.

WINGATE SCHOLARSHIP Tony Lopez, lecturer in English at the University of Plymouth was awarded the Wingate Scholarship for poetry, of the Harold Lyam Wingate Foundation.

ROYAL SCOTTISH GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY Scottish Geographical Medal: Gilbert Grosvenor, former president and current chairman of the National Geographic Society.

Livingstone Medal: Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria, Commonwealth secretary ageneral.

Mungo Park Medal: Michael Asher, explorer and lecturer.

President's Award: Alison McCleery, Napier University, Edinburgh.
