JAPAN FESTIVAL AWARDS. The following were 1996 prizewinners from higher education in the sections listed:

Visual arts: The British Museum (for its exhibition "The Passionate Art of Utamaro"); Royal Institute of British Architecture (introducing Japan's architects to Britain).

Education: Graham Healey and Alison Churchill for Sheffield University's new MA in Japanese studies by distance learning.

Literary: William Beasley, professor and historian; Marie Conte Helm, reader in Japanese studies at the University of Northumbria; The British Haiku Society for improving the British public's understanding of Japanese poetry.

CHARTERED ASSOCIATION OF CERTIFIED ACCOUNTANTS BRITISH ACCOUNTING ASSOCIATION

Ken Peasenell, professor of accounting at Lancaster University's management school, has been named 1995 distinguished academic of the year.
