NEW HALL, CAMBRIDGE Anne Lonsdale has been elected president, succeeding Valerie Pearl. Mrs Lonsdale was the University of Oxford's first director of external relations and played a founding role in the Association of European Universities' Public Relations and Information Officers and the Coimbra Group of European Universities. She was also chair of the Association of University Administrators until 1993.

UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

Barry Gooch, former secretary and registrar at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has been appointed registrar and university secretary, succeeding Geoff Lockwood.

UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER

Ann Tate, director of educational development, has been appointed provost of the university's Jordanstown campus and pro vice chancellor (external affairs); Fabian Monds, pro vice chancellor (planning and research) has been appointed provost of Magee College campus in Londonderry.

HILLCROFT COLLEGE

Helena Kennedy, barrister, and spokeswoman on civil liberties, has been appointed president, succeeding Betty Lockwood.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD

Mohamed Zairi, SABIC chair of best practice management in the European Centre for Total Quality Management, has been appointed director of the Benchmarking Centre Ltd.
