Studying in Slovakia: what you need to know
Slovak universities are supportive; the environment is student-friendly and the education system is well-structured – and some courses are free for international students

Slovakia, located in Eastern Europe, is like a hidden country for most of us – but it has a variety of universities. Some of them, such as Comenius university in Bratislava or Pavol Jozef Safarik University in the beautiful city of Kosice, appear in international rankings.
Slovakia is a country worth recommending to students who are looking for affordable, quality education in Europe. From my own educational experience, I found Slovak universities supportive, the environment student-friendly and the education system well-structured.
With proper guidance and preparation, students can receive a valuable education and an enriching life experience in one of Europe’s safest and most beautiful countries. Interestingly, the study of medicine is well developed in Slovakia – Western students are increasingly choosing it as an exchange destination, via Erasmus.
How to apply to university in Slovakia
Each university in Slovakia has its own application portal and deadlines, but the general procedure is similar for all. Students need to submit a completed application form, transcript of records, CV or resumé, motivational letter, language-proficiency certificate (IELTS or TOEFL) and letters of recommendation.
Some universities may require an application fee of around €20 (£17) to €50 (£44).
One of the biggest advantages of studying in Slovakia is the affordability. Tuition fees vary depending on the course and the university, but they are generally much lower than in Western Europe. English-taught programmes tend to cost between €2,000 and €5,000 per year, depending on the field of study. Some bachelor’s and master’s programmes, especially those taught in Slovak, are even free of charge for international students.
The Slovak government also offers scholarships for international students. If students are accepted by a Slovak university, they can apply for a government scholarship and receive 100 per cent scholarship, with a €500 monthly stipend.
In addition, the cost of living in Slovakia is relatively low, with students spending an average of €400 to €600 per month on accommodation, food, transportation and other basic expenses. University dormitories are also available at a much cheaper rate than private rentals.
Applying for a visa to study in Slovakia
Students from outside the European Union will need to apply for a Type D long-term visa for the purpose of study. Once in Slovakia, they must also apply for a temporary residence permit at the local Foreign Police Department.
The process can take some time, so it’s important for students to start early and prepare all the necessary documents. These include:
- Admission letter from the university
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of financial means
- Criminal record certificate
- Valid passport
- Health insurance
