Studying in the UAE: what to consider
Father and son walking in the UAE sand dunes

I’ve spent my entire life in Abu Dhabi: I attended school here and have worked in the UAE’s education sector for the past two decades. I have witnessed how this city has evolved from a handful of local institutions into a global education hub with internationally recognised universities.

Abu Dhabi now offers world-class education, state-of-the-art facilities and a rich multicultural environment. As someone who has seen the transformation up close, I’m happy to share this guide on applying to university in Abu Dhabi.

Why study in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi has invested heavily in higher education as part of the UAE’s vision for a knowledge-based economy. The city now hosts:

  • World-class public and private universities
  • Prestigious international branch campuses
  • Research-focused institutions and specialist academies
  • Strong links between universities, industry and government.

Abu Dhabi offers a diverse range of higher education institutions, many of which teach primarily in English and actively recruit international students. It offers a modern academic environment that appeals to students from a wide range of backgrounds.

What is student life like in Abu Dhabi?

Student life in Abu Dhabi combines academic focus with a high quality of living. The city is known for its safety, modern infrastructure and well-planned campuses. Many universities offer on-campus accommodation, while others help students find housing nearby.

Beyond campus, students have access to a wide range of cultural, social and recreational activities. From museums on Saadiyat Island and major cultural festivals to beaches, sports facilities, cafés and global cuisine, Abu Dhabi has much to offer outside the classroom. Major entertainment destinations such as Yas Island, home to theme parks, and the Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix each year, add to the city’s appeal.

Although the UAE is culturally conservative in some respects, Abu Dhabi is highly international and welcoming. Students quickly adapt to local customs, and universities place strong emphasis on student well-being, inclusion and support services.

How do you apply to university in Abu Dhabi?

Students apply directly through each university’s online admissions portal. Typical steps include:

  • Choosing your university and programme
  • Preparing documents (transcripts, passport, English test scores, etc)
  • Submitting the online application (fees may apply)
  • Completing interviews or assessments if required
  • Receiving an offer (conditional or unconditional).

Some universities operate rolling admissions. Others have fixed deadlines, usually for an autumn intake.

Entry requirements vary by university and programme but most include:

  • Recognised secondary school qualification (A levels, IB or equivalent)
  • Minimum GPA or grade requirements
  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL)
  • Entrance exams or interviews for competitive programmes.
