If the images of the young black woman (August 31) were supposed to support the argument that black students are exploited, they were inappropriate and ill-judged. At best they looked like fashion shots, and the plunging neckline was the sort of thing normally seen in the tabloid press. Either way, a racist stereotype is reinforced of black women as decorative rather than intellectually gifted. I would be surprised to be the only (white) female reader who found these images distasteful and interested to know what black female academics think.
