March 8, 2002

The launch of a national languages strategy in primary schools is welcome, (Analysis, THES , February 15), but where will the teachers come from? The 14-19 green paper announced a plan to allow pupils to drop languages at 14. This will further reduce the numbers going into higher education to study languages and exacerbate the shortage of language teachers.
