Letter: Eggheads versus battery hens (1)

February 2, 2001

I work in the business school of a "new" university, and most of my students, like those of Frank Furedi, are here only "to get a better job" ("Why I ... think universities are becoming anti-intellectual", THES, January 26). As they are mostly going to take up posts in industry, no wonder there is a lack of vision and imagination there.

We should stop selling education as a quid pro quo and start talking about the ethics of developing intellectually curious and idealistic citizens.

It is tragic that as a middle-aged has-been I am more enthusiastic and idealistic than my 18-year-old students.
