More about University of Medellín

The University of Medellin is a private university situated in the municipality of Medellin, Colombia's second largest city.

It was established in 1950, when a group of scholars recognised the need the city had for a higher education centre. The university describes its aims as "to offer education with freedom and without any political, racial, social, or religious constraints, or of any other sort, and to foster scientific research focusing a resolution to Colombian problems".

In 1961, the university moved to the community of Belen, where its current campus continues to develop graduate and undergraduate programs. The main campus is separated into various blocks featuring an array of facilities. These include a sports coliseum, laboratory centre, TV production centre, the Eduardo Fernandez Botero Library, and an auditorium. There is also a "Field of Experimentation", which includes an eco-garden, biofactory and telecommunications training camp.

Faculties at the university include: engineering, basic sciences, accountancy, economic and administrative sciences, social and human sciences, school of communication, and law.

The University of Medellin is dedicated to achieving academic excellence and has a focus on the generation of knowledge, integral formation of its students and promoting culture in an inclusive, innovative and critical environment. The university's scientific and technical outlook is reflected in its motto: "ciencia y libertad", which translates as "science and freedom".

It says its vision is to "promote higher education through academic excellence, a culture for research and social responsibility to contribute to regional and national development in an international context"; and defines its values as: justice, respect, responsibility, equity, solidarity, and coherence.
