The Computational Engineering and Design (CED) Research Group at the University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our Flight Dynamics and Control Research Laboratory. You will be working under the supervision of Dr Sergio Araujo-Estrada and Prof James Scanlan on the project “Adaptive AI Flight Controller for Improved Flight Characteristics”. The aim of this research is to develop a new generation of intelligent flight control systems capable of dynamically adapting to internal changes (e.g., component faults, geometry-configuration changes) and external perturbations (e.g., turbulence).

The project will use low-cost drone platforms to develop and trial this technology. As part of this, we will use a combination of simulated and physical flight tests to produce an adaptive neural flight controller for both a forward-flight and a vertical take-off and landing UAV configurations. You will be responsible for:


	conducting flight dynamics characterisation experiments for the two UAV platforms using our state-or-the-art R J Mitchell wind tunnel,
	producing a flight dynamics simulation model and training an adaptive neural flight controller using our High Performance Computing facility Iridis,
	conducting physical flight tests to assess the performance of the adaptive neural flight controller in in close collaboration with our project partner Luffy AI, an SME developing ultra-robust, neuroplastic flight control technology.


There will also be opportunities to supervise post-graduate students and to get involved in other projects in AI-based flight controllers.

The CED research group is comprised of experts in multidisciplinary engineering simulation and design, and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of engineering focused on industrial applications and combining a range of analytical, computational and experimental techniques.

If you are interested in this position, you should have or be close to completing a PhD in flight dynamics, simulation and control or a closely-related engineering field. Experience in aircraft flight dynamics modelling, simulation, and control, as well as developing AI-based control solutions is critical. Experience in wind tunnel and physical flight testing is desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a vacancy for a Professor/Associate Professor in Construction Engineering.

The Department is a leading force within education and research in the construction, civil engineering, and transport sectors.

With a focus on quality, sustainability and digitalisation, we contribute to value creation in both the public and private sectors. Through major research projects and innovative solutions, we support the green transition in the built environment.

The position is part of the Building Process research group and covers rock blasting technique, rock excavation in surface and underground operations, tunnelling, earth moving and similar.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position


	Teaching and research within the field of Construction Engineering
	Initiate research in planning, design and construction of tunnels, underground spaces and surface rock excavations
	Take part in interdisciplinary education and research collaboration across the different sections of the department, as well as other departments and faculties at NTNU
	Engage in applications for external funding from e.g. the Research Council of Norway, European Research Council, as well as the construction industry and the public owners
	Plan and lead research projects
	Participate in the further development of the Department’s Building Process research group
	Teach in relevant study programs, including supervision of PhD and MSc fellows, as well as in continuing education courses
	Topics of the research area includes:
	
		Excavation methods, equipment, capacity and cost models, quality, HES, resource efficiency and environmental impact
		Digitalization and BIM in construction engineering
		Adapting construction engineering to the green shift
		Design and optimization of construction works regarding technical, economic and environmental performance
	
	
	Use of experimental investigations in the laboratory and in the field has high priority
	
	Cooperation with other research groups in construction engineering and the Norwegian construction industry, in order to develop new methods and applicationI

Required qualifications 

Professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Professor in the field of construction engineering, as outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 


	Your scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Construction Engineering (or a comparable relevant field) 
	Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within Construction Engineering or related fields
	You must have strong and relevant research experience in addition to your PhD
	You must have experience from research projects in cooperation with the construction sector
	Good presentation skills in English, both written and spoken
	In addition to the requirements for basic educational competence, you must also document: 
	
		The development of the quality of your own teaching and supervision of students over time 
		Broad experience as a supervisor, preferably at a master’s/PhD level 
		Participation in improving the quality of education in a professional environment 
	
	


Associate professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of  Construction Engineering, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

As a Professor (code 1013) you are normally paid from gross 800 000 NOK – 1 200 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As an Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross 650 000 NOK – 850 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.  As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment, are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The Software Developer is part of a small software development team based in Canberra who is responsible for the development, delivery and maintenance of web-based national services that support research data discovery, connection, publishing, sharing and reuse. The Department of Health and Environmental Sciences combines distinctive disciplinary approaches to understand and solve some of the most critical challenges faced by society today.

In our programmes, we provide our students with the theoretical and practical foundations needed for a successful career working to improve the health and well-being of populations and the environment. The role includes the coordination, management, ethics reporting, recruitment, volunteer scheduling, collection of data and documentation of information and analysis required for this clinical trial, which will examine ways to modify the melanoma tumour microenvironment to reduce recurrence after nodal metastasis. This includes actively leading and contributing to research activities, contributing to designing research protocols, undertaking critical aspects of research work including formation of analysis and key findings.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	provide project management for the clinical research program including project planning, tracking, implementing and reporting
	support the chief investigator/supervisor in the development of the research project's objectives
	take a lead role in the collection of research data and collaborate to prepare initial analyse and insights for inclusion in preliminary reports
	undertake complex research and prepares analysus on key areas of focus, under broad guidance of the Chief Investigator and in collaboration with other senior research staff
	sources information, researches and prepares drafts for research publications and presentations including preparing literary reviews and carrying out theoretical research to support overall research objectives
	cultivate a culture of research excellence, ensuring the team is empowered with the latest knowledge and support
	undertake ad-hoc projects and other activities.


About you


	the suitable applicant will have a medical qualification with current Australian medical registration, and , post-graduate experience in general medicine
	experience in developing and working on research projects in the relevant field of work, including expertise in using research protocols and experimental design
	possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters
	having experience working with health services or relevant training, education or experience in clinical dermatology or related fields
	postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
